THE BEAUTY OF NIGHT

"Capturing real moments and transforming them into the surreal"

LIAM WONG

VISION

I create, capture and design meaningful aesthetics.

I love capturing real moments and transforming them into the surreal.

In 2015, I purchased my first DSLR, ahead of my trip to Tokyo.

When I arrived in Japan, I captured various parts of Tokyo, rarely venturing far from tourist spots.

Then one night it rained.

And the city came to life and I got lost in the beauty of Tokyo at night.

The images that follow represent my first venture into photography, with my series titled 'Tokyo Nights' (TO:KYO:OO) - capturing real moments after midnight in the city of Tokyo.

"Look carefully because this surreal illustration is actually a photograph"

By day, Liam Wong is an art director for a video game company. By night, he photographs the color and chaos of the largest city in the world.

"incredibly mesmerizing photos of Tokyo taken by an award-winning video game designer"

"Amazing photos from Canon photographer Liam Wong, as he explores a different side of the city everyone thinks they know."
“I love how moody and colorful these images are. Each has a graphic and cinematic quality that makes this collection very dreamy. Knowing that the creator of these images, Liam Wong, is a graphic designer for Ubisoft, a video game creator/publishing company, makes all sense in the world.”

Art Director Liam Wong spends his days directing the visual identity of video games at Ubisoft, while his nights are spent exploring the neon-splashed streets of his city of Tokyo, and sometimes London. Wong places these images, that seem to mimic the appearance of a video game themselves, on Instagram.
Heightened pinks, blues, yellows and greens jump forth from the murky depths of night life mystery creating a truly immersive photographic experience.

FAQ

How long have you been a photographer?

A year. I picked up photography in 2015, as a way to learn more about color, composition and contrast. My full-time job is working as an art director in the video games industry. Photography is still my hobby, but something I wish to continue.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

My name often confuses people. I am Eurasian; half Scottish and half Malaysian. Born and raised in Scotland and currently living in Canada. I'm not Japanese, or living in Japan! :)

What kind of equipment do you use?

Canon 5D Mark III and more recently a Canon 5D Mark IV (Thanks Canon!)
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens
Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT Flash (and gels)
Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (After-Effects / Photoshop / Lightroom)
Gitzo Mountaineer Tripod
Lexar 1066x CF Cards

HOW DO YOU DO IT?

Magic.

Do you sell prints?

Visit my store: www.society6.com/liamwon9 for a wide variety of prints.

Are you available FOR A COOL PROJECT?

I am always keen to collaborate with like-minded people. If you have a project in mind, please do get in touch. I have experience in graphic design, web, motion graphics, art direction, photography & video games.

Do you HAVE a photo book?

It is currently in development. I will be adding the finishing touches to my book for early 2017.

Do you have tips for beginner photographers?

Take the time to learn about the basics. Composition, color and contrast. I focused on these starting out and I was able to then apply it to a lot of my pictures. After that, find what it is you love taking pictures of and do it as often as possible. Instagram is a great platform for this.

Do you plan to visit other CITIES?

My goal next year is to visit other parts of Asia.
